Cardiff Pediatric Acuity Test Set™

Do you test children aged 6 months to 3 years? If so The Cardiff Acuity Test™ is designed specifically for acuity measurement of this age group. The test is also effective with people who have compromising reasons for experiencing difficulty responding to typical age appropriate tests. In addition The Cardiff Pediatric Contrast Test™ is available for contrast testing which employs similar administration techniques.

TEST PRINCIPLES

The test employs the principles of vanishing optotypes. For example, the figures (fish, car etc.) blend with the gray background at the acuity shades depicting/measuring the child’s acuity threshold. Thus resolution, detection and recognition acuity thresholds are all brought together. The target figures are pictures, all of the same overall size, drawn in decreasing widths of white and black lines. Acuity (threshold) is determined by the narrowest white band for which the target is visible to the child.

TEST ADMINISTRATION

Before testing it is important to determine if the child can shift gaze above and below midline, vertically. It is also necessary to observe what “fixation” looks like for the child before testing can begin.

Present the cards, one after another, and note the movement of the child’s eyes as he/she fixates either at the top or bottom of the card. The vanishing optotypes use the principle of ‘Preferential Looking’ by providing a pediatric test method with excellent accuracy of diagnosis. If the child has sufficient acuity to recognize the drawings he/she most likely will choose to look towards the top or bottom of each card (the end on which has the drawing). This is effective because children naturally prefer to look at drawings rather than the blank ends of the gray cards.

"Preferential Looking" works when the examiner does not know whether the top or the bottom of the cards contains the target figure. If the child does not show a preference for either the top or bottom of the card, the acuity threshold has been exceeded.
