ON LINE COURSE BY DR. DUTTON: CVI – Damage to the Brain –A Common Cause of Visual Impairment to Children
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is a recreation of a workshop on CVI conducted by Dr. Gordon Dutton, a pediatric ophthalmologist from Glasgow, Scotland, at the 2006 AER International Conference. The workshop entitled, CVI –DAMAGE TO THE BRAIN-A COMMON CAUSE OF VISUAL IMPAIRMENT IN CHILDREN, is an online course broken into nine sections. The course provides students an overview of the visual system and how it works, disorders of vision due to damage to the brain, and approaches to helping students with vision problems due to damage to the brain, Dr. Dutton provides participants theory and practical application from his expertise as a clinician working with children and their families having been diagnosed with CVI. The course is broken into eight learning modules. The ninth and last section is a question and answer forum for those who attended the Salt Lake City workshop. The intended audience for this course is any care provider working with a child diagnosed or suspected of having cortical (cerebral) visual impairment.
COURSE GOALS: Student successfully completing this course will be able to: 1. Describe how the visual system works 2. Understand what can go wrong with the visual system due to damage to the brain 3. Provide solutions and interventions for children having or suspected of having CVI 4. Share their knowledge and learning experiences on CVI with other course participants using the FORUM feature of the course platform
COURSE TIMELINE: Students enrolling in this course will have 3 months to complete the course. The course is available to students 24/7 online to registered students.
CERTIFICATION: This course is approved for 6 CE units from the Academy for Certification Rehabilitation and Education Vision Professionals (ACVREP). Students seeking certification must successfully complete course test and evaluation.
COURSE TEST: Those wishing to obtain professional certification credit from ACVREP must complete course self test and obtain a score of 70% which is considered passing.
